Healthy eating is a foundational aspect of healthy living. Because of it, I recognize nutrition and your relationship to your diet as an integral part of our embodiment work together.
Through the foods we eat, we nourish our bodies with the energy and other resources needed to function throughout the day! This is the part of our day where we get to make conscious choices about how we are going to fuel ourselves, and otherwise create the foundation of the very physical and biochemical nature of who we are.
However, learning to eat healthier is about so much more than finding the right diet or meal plan that will solve all of your health problems. More than this, I recognize that healthy eating has to do with the relationship to food, to your body, and to this Earth.
Healthy eating is about:
- Understanding basic nutrition principles (leaving specific, technical details of the nature of specific foods/diets to individualized conversation)
- Cultivating behaviors that fully nourish and support your unique self, physically of course, but also taking into account all other aspects of self (mental/emotional/spiritual)
- Releasing beliefs and patterns that cause harm to yourself, both mentally & physically
My nutrition services ARE NOT:
- A clinical assessment
- A meal plan provider
- Restrictive in the name of weight loss
My nutrition services ARE:
- About education – what are foundational nutrition principles and how do we navigate the complex science and mountains of data surrounding healthy eating
- About tangible practices – ones that will get you into the habit of integrating outside information with your own lived experience
- About guidance – healthy eating can be tough, but there is a clear path forward
Understanding basic nutrition principles
Nutrition science is a complex science. Food, itself, is made up of multitudes of factors that all interact in vast networks. All of this complexity then enters into the human body, wherein it is digested and sent into circulation to go and interact with the vast complexity of the human body!
More than this, your unique self is not going to be the same as all other human beings. because of this, nutrition must be recognized as an individualized path. There is no space for cookie-cutter diets and meal plans. This is about you developing a relationship with food that is nourishing and otherwise supportive for you given your body and your lifestyle.
Because of the innate complexity of the system, getting a clear picture of all of the precise pathways involved in nutrition and human health is quite literally an impossible task!
You need to be able to make healthy dietary decisions based on the most important nutrition principles without understanding all of the pathways and mechanisms at play.
If you will, allow me to guide you to the most important information that will serve your healthiest self.
Releasing dangerous beliefs and patterns
This is a big one! The unfortunate reality is that our society is full of toxic ideas, models, and protocols – all having to do with poor quality ideas of what it means to eat a healthy diet.
Part of developing a nourishing diet means releasing those beliefs and behaviors that are not-so-nourishing, including ones that may be causing serious harm to your body.
Cultivating nourishing behaviors
As you release the patterns that no longer serve you, you will be cultivating practices that do! Learning to choose foods that more fully nourish your own human body is the goal.
Your own human body – that’s the key here! Nutrition is NOT a one-size-fits-all sort of practice. It is more about:
- Understanding nutrition fundamentals essential for all human life
- Understanding your body’s unique needs based on your genetics and life history and meeting these needs with practices tailored to your current life circumstances and personal preferences
What does yoga have to do with healthy eating?
For some individuals, maybe nothing!
But for others, it can help to call upon practices from the yoga tradition to tune into your own experience.
Yoga therapy is one framework that I call upon to help interested individuals tune into their own experience and find their own path forward towards a more nourishing and supportive way of eating.
Through yoga therapy, I can help you:
- embrace a more mindful way of eating
- tune into your body’s ways of expressing its needs
- release much of the chaos that keeps us tied up in harmful patterns
- calm anxiety and otherwise reduce stress around eating
